In Jean Renoir’s great film Grand Illusion, the old world, embodied by German commander Eric Von Stroheim and French officer Pierre Fresnay, kills itself so that the new world may escape into the night and survive.
Note how the German and the Frenchman speak English to each other - because they are educated enough to know many languages, and to speak English is a rare treat, available only when they find someone like themselves.
