I balanced carefully on the first step of the ladder, the folded wallpaper in one hand, and used the other to steady myself as I moved up. My eyes became level with the toes of Lazar’s worn brown boots, pointing at me from the other side of the ladder.
“Hey, look,” I said. “You under-pronate more on your left foot than your right.” And I grinned up at him.
From the top of the ladder, his tousled golden head haloed by the skylight above, Lazar smiled down at me. “I love it when you talk dirty.”
Nancy Wake, who has died in London just before her 99th birthday, was a New Zealander brought up in Australia. She became a nurse, a journalist who interviewed Adolf Hitler, a wealthy French socialite, a British agent and a French resistance leader. She led 7,000 guerrilla fighters in battles against the Nazis in the northern Auvergne, just before the D-Day landings in 1944. On one occasion, she strangled an SS sentry with her bare hands. On another, she cycled 500 miles to replace lost codes. In June 1944, she led her fighters in an attack on the Gestapo headquarters at Montlucon in central France.
Ms Wake was furious the TV series [later made about her life] suggested she had had a love affair with one of her fellow fighters. She was too busy killing Nazis for amorous entanglements, she said.
Nancy recalled later in life that her parachute had snagged in a tree. The French resistance fighter who freed her said he wished all trees bore “such beautiful fruit.” Nancy retorted: “Don’t give me that French shit.”
Ms. Wake … had mixed feelings about previous cinematic efforts to portray her wartime exploits … “It was well-acted but in parts it was extremely stupid,” she said. “At one stage they had me cooking eggs and bacon to feed the men. For goodness’ sake, did the Allies parachute me into France to fry eggs and bacon for the men? There wasn’t an egg to be had for love nor money. Even if there had been why would I be frying it? I had men to do that sort of thing.”
On the seventh day of December, I offer up to youuuuuuuuuu:

The dramatic battle was caught on camera at the world famous ‘Tiger Canyons’ in the Londolozi private game reserve in Pretoria, South Africa.
This is goddamn disgusting. These animals are poorly bred by a man who cares nothing for genetics, is introducing non native species somewhere they never belonged, and shoving them together in close quarters.
a man who plans to breed white tigers and wants to release them into india. Which is delusional at best, as no one would allow him to do that with such terribly bred tigers.
A man who has shot one of his own tigers in her foot, a PREGNANT tiger, and shrugged it off as if it were nothing.
This man is appalling, what he is doing is appalling. The fact it is getting any kind of neutral or good media attention disgusts me.
This should not happen, and should not be getting good media attention.
Oh my god I had no idea this was in Tiger Canyon when I posted these images a bit ago. I am absolutely horrified. This kind of violence certainly happens with wild tigers but in a closed environment like what JV keeps them I …I am disgusted.
I didn’t realize when I first posted this that this was a tiger breeding facility either. The animals are no less magnificent, but the facility is deplorable.
